Tk 2.5 lakh gold ornaments looted from Demra house

Police said a gang of eight robbers broke the collapsible gate of the ground floor first and then broke open the door of the first floor house with a drill machine.

Entering the house the robbers beat up the inmates -- Rebatunnesa, wife of the expatriate Ashraf Ali and her son Abdul Halim Ratan -- and took away the keys of the almirahs at gunpoint. Later, they confined them to a toilet, tying their hands from back.

"The robbers took away around 25 tolas of gold ornaments and Tk 1,600," said Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahman of Demra Police Station who visited the spot yesterday afternoon.

Police could neither recover the looted goods, nor could they arrest the robbers.

In another incident, a team of New Market police arrested three alleged robbers -- Rezaul Karim alias Juboraj, Sohel and Johnny -- from Babupura area at around 11:30pm on Tuesday while they were preparing to commit a robbery. Police seized a 9mm revolver and two bullets from them.
