13 trapped in Indian power plant tunnel

Hundreds of rescuers were trying to free 13 workers trapped by mudslides since Sunday in a tunnel at a hydroelectric power project in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, an official said.

He said the men employed by India's largest engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen and Toubro were working inside the tunnel Sunday night when heavy mudslides triggered by torrential rain blocked the passageway.

They are part of a team constructing a 2,000 megawatt power project at Dulanmukh in Arunachal Pradesh, bordering China. The site is some 150 kilometres (93 miles) from the state capital Itanagar.

"We are trying hard to rescue the trapped people from inside the tunnel and we hope to find them safe and sound," D.K. Singh, an official of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, told AFP by telephone.
