He also appreciated the government's programmes on the women and children development and congratulated Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for her personal initiatives to improve the lot of workers.

During a meeting with State Minister for Labour and Employment Amanullah Aman here, Juan Somavia said, "Political commitment is essential for implementation of the ILO conventions."

Aman, leading a Bangladesh delegation, is now attending the 93rd session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva.

Their meeting on the sidelines of the conference covered Bangladesh's progress in ensuring workers rights and ILO activities.

The state minister requested ILO to strengthen its activities in Bangladesh, particularly in the field of employment generation, through pragmatic and realistic programmes and skill development schemes. He also extended an invitation to the ILO DG to visit Bangladesh.
