Police arrested the chairman of Amadi union parishad under Koira upazila from a shrimp enclosure at Jagirmahal village on Friday midnight on charge of an acid attack in which an eight-month-old baby was killed.

Police caught Chairman Shah Mohammad Ebadat Hossain, one of the accused named in the FIR of the acid attack case, as he tried to run away, but his accomplices managed to escape.

A gang of culprits threw acid on Mukta, the baby girl, her parents Mostafa Molla and Rexona Parvin and her brother Badsha, 6, when they were sleeping at their home at Jagirmahal village at around 11.30pm on Thursday, critically injuring three of them.

The baby succumbed to her injuries on Friday afternoon while her mother and brother were taken to Dhaka for treatment. However, Mostafa, a shrimp trader, escaped unhurt.

The UP chairman masterminded the acid attack to kill the whole family over a dispute with Mostafa over the possession of a shrimp enclosure, said Khulna Police Super Habibur Rahman.

A massive hunt is going on to nab the other accused, he added.
