Court orders investigation into Kashimpur jail torture

The court also directed the superintendent to submit the probe report by June 9 for taking action against the deputy jailer and a jail guard.

Sessions Judge's Court passed the order following a petition by Mohammad Shariful Islam, a convict in Kashimpur Jail.

In his order, the judge said the allegations in the complaints against the two are shocking, adding that physical torture of the convict is illegal and unacceptable.

Shariful, a convict in an arms case and an accused in another arms case, on Thursday complained to the court that the deputy jailer and a jail guard have been torturing him for the last three months. He also showed marks of bruises all over his body.

The convict, sentenced on October 9, 2003 to 24 years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing illegal arms and ammunition, in his petition said he was shifted to Kashimpur Jail on February 25 this year.

Since then deputy jailer Mohammad Reza and jail guard Mohammad Kalim have tortured him physically on various pretexts. They also threatened to kill him. He sought security for his life and prayed for action against them, Shariful said.

Advocate Jahangir Alam moved the petition on behalf of the convict.

The deputy jailer denied the allegations against him and told The Daily Star on Thursday that Shariful brought false and baseless charges against him.
