Summer Fields becomes champion

Bay View School became the runners up at the final debate held at the Theatre Institute, Chattagram.

Tabassum Ambreen of Oxbridge International School was adjudged the best debater of the competition while Gopal Biswas of Summer Fields School and Zinnat Hossain of Bangladesh Elementary School got the second and third position respectively.

The topic of the debate was "City corporation should get optimum liberty when development is in question."

Oxbridge International School and Bangladesh Elementary School secured the 2nd and the 3rd position in the competition organised by Drishty Chittagong - an educational and cultural organisation, under the auspices of The Daily Star and the Mutual Trust Bank Limited.

The nine-day-long debate competition was held under parliamentary system for the first time in the port city.

Eminent scientist Prof Jamal Nazrul Islam was the chief guest at the prize giving ceremony.

Abul Momen, resident editor of the Prothom Alo Chittagong office, and Iftekhar Ali Khan, deputy managing director of Mutual Trust Bank Limited, were the special guests.

Chairperson of Drishty Debating Club Safia Rahman and Vice-president of Mutual Trust Bank Khorshed Alam attended the function as distinguished guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Jamal said debate helps take a correct decision.

He called for arranging debate competition in every educational institution frequently to help students prepare for future leadership.

Abul Momen said debate leads one to a logical mindset.

Lack of this mindset results in the outburst of emotion which is an impediment to correct decision, he added.

Iftekhar Ali said the debate competition provides the future generation with a scope for developing their logical thoughts.

He assured continued support of his bank to holding such events.

The organisers of the competition hoped that such efforts would continue to help future generation practice logic, rationality and tolerance.

It will also help future leaders take decision not being carried out by emotional outburst, but only after being convinced by logic, they observed.

With Rashedul Amin Rashed of Drishty in the chair, the function was also addressed by Drishty Chittagong President Masud Bakul, General Secretary Saif Chowdhury and Organising Secretary Adnan Mannan.
