Shop owner bombed to death

UNB, Shariatpur
A sweetmeat shop owner was bombed to death at Nilkandi on the outskirts of the town on Wednesday night.

Unknown assailants lobbed two bombs at Nikhil Chandra Ghose, 45, resulting in his death on the spot. His employee Bikash Chandra, 12, was seriously injured. He was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital.

Locals and police said the killers swooped on Nikhil and Bikash while they were returning home from Angaria bazaar, closing the shop at about 11:00pm

Nikhil's brother Badal Ghose suspected that unidentified extortionists, who had been demanding a toll of Tk 50,000 from Nikhil, might be behind the murder.

No-one was arrested until Thursday evening. Police said they were looking for the killers.

Local businessmen condemned the killing and announced a three-day mourning.

All shops and business houses in the town remained closed yesterday. The businessmen will hold a protest meeting today and submit a memorandum to the deputy commissioner tomorrow.
