Reintroduce UZ system to make JS effective
They said parliament will not be effective unless the Upazila system is reintroduced as the lawmakers will remain busy with distribution of rice and wheat and other local government activities instead of concentrating on making laws.
The Upazila System Imple-mentation Parishad organised the roundtable on "Upazila system in Bangladesh: The past, present and future" at the National Press Club. Leaders of different political parties took part in the roundtable.
Saifuddin Ahmed Manik, general secretary of Gono Forum, called for decentralisation of power and said MPs should not be involved in local government activities.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna, organising secretary of the Awami League, Firoz Rashid, political advisor to Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, ASM Abdur Rob, president of a faction of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Hasanul Haq Inu, president of another faction of JSD, defence and security analyst Brig. Gen. (retd.) M Sakhawat Hussain and several former Upazila chairmen spoke at the discussion.
