'Make new literate's edn meaningful'

Association for Community Education Director Muhammad Azizul Haque receives Chand Sultana Literacy Prize-2004 from Posts and Telecommunications Minister Barrister Md Aminul Haque at Dam auditorium in the city yesterday

The new literate persons with limited literacy need various reading materials to retain their literacy as well as to make their education meaningful, he said.

He was speaking as the chief guest in a function organised yesterday by Dhaka Ahsania Mission on the occasion of awarding Chand Sultana Literacy Prize-2004 in the auditorium of Dhaka Ahsania Mission at Dhanmondi in the city.

Muhammad Azizul Haque, director of the Association for Community Education (Bace) received the prize for his organisation's contribution in the field of rural and educational development.

President and Chief Executive of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (Dam) Kazi Rafiqul Alam presided over the function.

The speakers underscored the contributions of Chand Sultana in the field of materials development and thereby in the spread of literacy and education among the masses and invited others to devote themselves in this important field in the interest of the country.

Save the Children (USA) Director M Habibur Rahman presented a paper on 'Problems of Non Formal Education in Bangladesh and Remedies' while Dam Public Relations Director Prof Nurul Islam delivered the welcome speech. Dr Azharul Islam of Dhaka University also addressed the function.
