Massive programme to make Dhaka city greener soon

A high-level meeting at the Prime Minister's office yesterday took a number of decisions to implement the Dhaka greening programme, official sources said.

The decisions include measures to plant trees in all suitable places like office premises, staff quarters, fallow lands, roadsides, embankments and riverbanks.

The meeting held at the directive of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia under the 'Committee for Good Governance and Development in Dhaka City' was presided over by Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Siddiqui.

Secretaries, other senior officials and representatives from different agencies and departments, including Dhaka City Corporation (DCC), Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Dhaka Transport Coordination Board (DTCB), Roads and Highways Department, Public Works Department, Dhaka Wasa and BIWTA attended the meeting.

Meeting sources said, plantation of trees will begin in all important roads, including Dhaka bypass, city protection embankment, banks of the Buriganga and other rivers, and other suitable places from the upcoming tree plantation season.

The meeting decided to send letters to all secretaries to hold urgent meetings with the agencies and departments under their respective ministries to begin plantation of saplings in all possible places, including office premises, staff quarters and fallow lands.

Rajuk will take necessary measures to plant trees in those areas of the metropolis that fall outside the jurisdiction of City Corporation.

Since all types of trees are not suitable for all places, the DCC was entrusted with the responsibility of urgently preparing a tree plantation manual selecting species of trees for particular areas of zones of the metropolis.
