Seminar on leadership development begins today

Students from 17 countries will take part in the seminar, organised by the AIESEC, a global organisation of the students. The countries include host Bangladesh, India, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and the United Arab Emirates.

Although the organisation has a strong leaning towards business leadership, the skills that will be taught at the conference are relevant in any area in which organisational management is required, said Shamnoon Muhib Chowdhury, president of AIESEC Bangladesh, at a press conference in the city on Tuesday.

AIESEC is a French acronym that stands for International Association of Students in Economics and Management. Headquartered in the Netherlands, the organisation has membership across the globe.

Sponsored by GrameenPhone, this annual event is also co-sponsored by Siemens, Nestle and Rahimafrooz as well as three Dhaka-based universities -- Brac University, North South University and International University, Bangladesh.

The formal opening ceremony of the seminar will be held at the International School Dhaka on March 25, with Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury as chief guest. A cultural fair 'Global Village' will also be held there.

Liv Flores, Asia Pacific director of AIESEC, emphasised that the seminar would provide a forum for "people to get to know what Bangladesh has to offer, particularly in its strong NGO sector."
