Strike at JU dept from today

The authorities made the two appointments illegally on basis of nepotism and politicization to strengthen their power to pass the upcoming Syndicate and Senate elections, sources alleged.

Of the selected teachers, Pinaki Shingha, wife of Prof Shyamol Kumar of the same department, was appointed earlier in 1998. Her appointment was later cancelled in October in 2000 due to poor academic qualifications, sources said.

Pinaki, who completed her honors and masters from Patuakhali Government College with two second classes, was selected ignoring the candidates with four first classes with even brighter academic backgrounds, sources said.

Tahmina Jamali, wife of the incumbent chairman of the department Prof Nazmul Alam, with two second classes in HSC and Honors, was also selected on the basis of nepotism.

Sources said the authorities ignored the written recommendation of a selection committee member not to maker the two appointments.
