35 lakh slum dwellers in city

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan informed the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday that the number of slum dwellers in the capital is about 35 lakh.

Replying to a question from Golam Habib Dulal, he said, there are about 4,500 slums in the capital city.

On a question from Major (retd) Monjur Kader, he said, the cleaners of Dhaka City Corporation start sweeping the city late at night. The authorities concerned take care so that the sweeping of city streets ends before sunrise considering the convenience of morning walkers, he added.

The minister, replying to a question from Muhammad Giasuddin, said, the process of allocating Taka 4.76 crore for the development of roads and Tk 2.99 crore for the improvement of drainage system in Narayanganj town is under consideration.

On a question from SA Sultan, he said, the government has given top priority to poverty alleviation in its national rural development policy. Its objective is to implement various projects to make rural people self-reliant.

Replying to a question from Mashiur Rahman Ranga, he said, 75 percent of the salaries of the union parishad (UP) secretaries are being paid by the government while 25 percent from UPs own funds.
