54 policemen get gallantry awards

Fifty-four police personnel have been awarded gallantry medals in recognition of their professional excellence and courageous role in arresting the dreaded criminals.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia decorated the policemen with the medals at a colourful ceremony on the opening day of the Police Week-2005 at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka yesterday.

Among the recipients, nine received Bangladesh Police Medal (five of them posthumously), three Bangladesh Police Medal (service), 16 President's Police Medal and 26 received President's Police Medal (service).

The five who won the posthumous awards are SM Mizanur Rahman, former officer-in-charge of Pangsha thana in Rajbari, Aminul Islam, assistant sub-inspector of Sutrapur thana under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Liakat Miah, head constable working for detective branch under DMP, Mohammad Abu Taher (constable No 560) and Mohammad Abu Taher (constable No 219) of Teknaf thana in Cox's Bazar district.

Four other recipients of the Bangladesh Police Medal are ASP Mohammad Nazrul Islam, assistant director of Rab-7, Mohammad Abdul Latif Bhuiyan, Officer-in-charge of Trishal thana, Major Mohammad Hafizul Islam Khan of Rab-1 and Ali Ahmed Masud, sub-inspector of Demra thana.

Besides, M A Aziz Sarkar, deputy inspector general of police in Khulna Range, Colonel Chowdhury Fazlul Bari of Rab-1 and Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud, deputy commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), received the Bangladesh Police Medal (service).

The 16 policemen who got the President's Police Medal are M Akbar Ali, deputy police commissioner of KMP, Officers-in-Charge Mohammad Kamruzzaman and Mohammad Mosharaf Hossain, sub-inspectors Mohammad Shahabuddin Azad, Mohammad Shahidullah, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Mohammad Azizul Haque, Mohammad Monirul Islam and Shahadara Khan, Assistant Sub-Inspector AKM Saidur Rahman, DMP constable Mohammad Abdul Kader Khan, Nayek Mohammad Amir Hossain of Rab-1, Nayek Mohammad Ekramul Haq of Rab-1, KMP constable Dipok Kumar Pal, army men Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad and Sergeant Amir Hossain of Rab-7.

The recipients of the President's Police Medal (service) are Superintendents of Police (SPs) Mahbubur Rahman, Mohammad Ibrahim Fathmi, M Mahbub Alam and Sayed Toufiq Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of CMP Mohammad Abdullah Hel Baki, Major Mohammad Ataul Karim, Lt BN Mohammad Firoj Khan of Rab-3, Major Sayed Mohammad Lokman Hamid of Rab-4, Major Sharif Ahsan, Captain Tariq Rahman Khan, Captain Sharif Raihan, Captain Abu Mohammad Humayun Morshed, Lt BN ATM Shahin Parvez, Senior Assistant Police Superintendent Mohammad Golam Rouf Khan and Senior Warrant Officer Abdul Maleq of Rab-7, Additional Superintendent Mohammad Shahidullah Khan and Captain Mohammad Anisur Rahman of Rab-2, Captain Mohammad Mehedi Hassan Khan of Rab-6, Senior Assistant Police Commissioner Mohammad Shahjahan, Officers-in-Charge Mahmubur Rahman, Mohammad Ashraful Islam, Mohammad Nasir Uddin and Mohammad Abdun Noor, Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Inspector Mohammad Zakaria Hossain and Sub-Inspector Azizur Rahman.
