RU dining hall staffs begin strike

RU Correspondent
The dining hall workers of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday began an indefinite work abstention to realise the demand for confirmation of their jobs as university employees.

Earlier on Thursday night, the workers of 16 dining halls took out a procession from Nawab Abdul Latif Hall premises and paraded the main thoroughfares on the campus.

They also held a rally.

Addressing the rally, RU Dining Hall Union President Siraj Mia said the programme would continue until their demand is met.

Following the work abstention programme, a tense situation has been prevailing at the residential halls.

Several thousand male and female students yesterday suffered a lot as they had to take their meals at hotels and restaurants outside the campus.

Angry students have met their respective hall provosts and requested them to solve the problem immediately, sources said.

They also threatened to take action against the dining hall workers if the problem is not solved.

When contacted, Dining Hall Workers Union General Secretary Abdul Karim Mia said they will observe hunger strike on the campus in support of their demand.
