'Anti-liberation forces out to destroy spirit of Language Movement'

They said the alliance government has been conspiring to undo the democracy that the country earned after a long movement.

Bomb and grenade attacks on different cultural programmes, and the killings of progressive political leaders and intellectuals testify that the nation is in a deep crisis today, said Justice KM Sobhan.

He said the denial of Bangabandhu's contribution to the language movement by some political parties is a denial to the history of the country.

In a keynote paper, parishad General Secretary Dr SA Malek said the people of Bengal always cherished a peaceful co-existence of all religions.

"One cannot be a real Bangalee unless he or she is able to break the barrier of religions and becomes a humanist," he added.

Dr Malek said violation of human rights and downslide in law and order have crossed all previous records.

Former vice- chancellor of Dhaka University AK Azad Chowdhury called upon all to be united and launch a strong movement against the anti-liberation forces.

He said the government is distorting the history of the country in a bid to deny the contribution of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his associates who dreamt of a non-communal and democratic state.

Dr Samad, Dr Harunur Rashid, Dr Hossain Mansur, Dr Shamsul Huda Harun, Mustafa Nurul Islam, and Dr Akhtaruzzaman also spoke.
