Political leaders, journos slate bomb attack

They called for a greater unity among journalists of the country to build up strong resistance against continuing bomb attacks launched by criminals.

Khulna Press Club (KPC), Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) and Metropolitan Union of Journalists (MUJ), Khulna jointly organised the rally on the press club premises.

Speaking at the rally, Matiur Rahman, editor of the Prothom Alo, said Bangladesh has become the most dangerous country in Asia, especially for journalists.

Thirteen newsmen were killed in the southwestern region in the last few years but the killers could not be brought to book due to flawed investigation of the cases, he said.

He alleged that the criminals cannot be punished due to their connection with a section of corrupt policemen.

Khulna City BNP President M Nurul Islam, MP, said the killers of journalists cannot go unpunished. All political parties should forge unity to face the situation, he suggested.

District Awami League President Shaikh Harun-ar-Rashid called upon the people to launch a movement against the bomb and gun attacks on journalists and political leaders.

BFUJ President Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Secretary General of its another faction Ruhul Amin Gazi called upon the journalists to fight all evils unitedly, sinking all differences.

They criticised the failure of the police to track down the killers of journalists in the southwestern region.

Presided over by KPC President Sheikh Abu Hasan, the rally was also addressed by Nayeb-e-Amir of city Jamaat Shafiqul Alam, Alhaj Abul Hossain of Jatiya Party, Dainik Purbanchal Editor Liaquat Ali and leaders of various professional organisations.
