2 jailed for throwing acid on housewife

Special Tribunal Judge SKM Anisur Rahman Khan handed down the verdict on Md Eshak and Md Monir.

Eshak was sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment and Monir seven years' imprisonment. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.

However, two other accused were acquitted of the charge.

According to the prosecution, the convicts threw acid on Hasina Begum, wife of Belayet Hossain, at Hatempur village in Patharghata on April 24 last year over a previous enmity.

Another report from Habiganj adds: A special tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced three people to seven years' rigorous imprisonment each for the acid attack on a member of a Gram Sarker on January 3 last year.

The court also fined the convicts -- M Tofazzal Haq, M Abdul Haq and Shahed Ali of Mazlishpur village in Baniachang upazila -- Tk 5,000 each. They will have to suffer another six months' imprisonment if they fail to pay.

According to the prosecution, the convicts called Ilias Mia out of his house and threw acid on him over a previous enmity.

The victim's wife filed a case with the police against six people.

After examining the records and witnesses, tribunal Judge M Azizul Islam handed down the verdict. Three other accused were acquitted.
