Be alert against plot to destroy democracy

Tarique Rahman urges partymen
UNB, Gopalganj
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman has urged the grassroots level leaders of the party to be vigilant against any conspiracy against multiparty democracy.

"President Ziaur Rahman had introduced the multiparty democracy. You will have to be alert so that no evil force can destroy it by hatching conspiracy," he told a conference of the grassroots level leaders here yesterday.

Around 3,800 union and ward level leaders from five districts -- Gopalganj, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Rajbari and Faridpur -- attended the conference and expressed their views focussing on the expectations of the people and successes, failures, and limitations of the present BNP government.

They also pledged to work together to ensure BNP's return to power again overcoming all limitations.

Tarique Zia, who presided over the conference, said such conferences are important, as the government wants to run the country in line with the expectations of the grassroots level leaders, who are the lifeline of the party.

Many discussants alleged that in many cases, their views and expectations were ignored by the central leaders when the party came to power.

The daylong conference started at 9:00am and continued until the evening with the participation of the union representatives.

Addressing the conference as chief guest, standing committee member KM Obaidur Rahman MP said the BNP gained the confidence of the people who voted for the party again and again entrusting it with the responsibility of running the country.

BNP standing committee member Khandker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed MP also spoke at the conference as special guest.

All the local leaders, who addressed the conference in line with a set 18-point agenda, said a conspiracy was on against the BNP, but the people were very much with the party.
