18 victim families get compensation
Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury handed over the money at a function at Shaheed Zia Hall.
Families of four victims Billal Hossain, Ayesha Khatun, Champa and Sufia could not get the compensation as their heirs were not found.
The injured workers also received money for their treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the BKMEA has set an example by giving compensation so quickly to the victim families.
He called for remaining alert so that such tragic incident could happen in future.
The minister suggested introduction of group insurance for the welfare of the workers.
BKMEA President Fazlul Haque said members of the deceased families would be provided with jobs.
Besides, the arrears of all workers will be paid, he added.
State Minister for Freedom Fighters Affairs Prof Rezaul Karim, Muhammad Giasuddin MP, Advocate Abul Kalam MP, and former BGMEA president Kazi Moniruzzaman attended the function.
Twenty-two workers were burnt to death in the terrible fire that broke out in the garment factory on January 7.
