Quick changes, reforms can help resolve problems: Joy

"There are lots of problems here… If I get the opportunity, I will make Bangladesh a modern country where no-one will starve," he told reporters at the Zia International Airport before leaving for London en route to Washington.

Joy, who plans to come to Dhaka in March, said changes should be brought about and the country modernised. "The government can do it if it so wishes."

Replying to a question, he said that as his wife Kristine, a US attorney, is doing a job in America, he would not settle down here permanently but would frequently come to Dhaka.

"I don't have any ambition of becoming a political leader, nor any wish to make Sudha Sadan a second informal seat of power… My mother remains at the helm of politics and I will serve the country staying beside her," said the US-educated computer engineer.

Joy came here with his American wife, Kristine Overmire, on December 22, triggering speculations about his joining active politics.

Kristine said, "This is a nice country and I hope I would see a more fantastic Bangladesh in future."

Hasina gave them a hearty send-off at the airport.

Party leaders Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Abdur Razzaq MP, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta MP, Motia Chowdhury, Kazi Zafrullah MP, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP, Saber Hossan Chowdhury, Syed Abul Hossain MP, Rahamat Ali MP, and Zahid Hasan Russel MP were also present.
