Citigroup provides $ 30,000 to book reading programme

Biswa Sahitya Kendra, an educational and cultural organisation, is working to build up an enlightened, enriched and committed generation of future citizens.

Mamun Rashid, chief executive officer of Citibank NA, presented the grant to Abdullah Abu Sayeed, chairman of Biswa Sahitya Kendra, in the city.

Md Shahjahan Bhuiyan, managing director of Prime Bank, Syed Javed Iqbal, chief operating officer of Khulna Power Company Limited, and Matiur Rahman, editor of the Prothom Alo, were also present.

Citibank has recently completed a six-month business campaign along with the Prothom Alo on raising funds for the Biswa Sahitya Kendra.

Abdullah Abu Sayeed said, "We need to enrich the young generation through reading more and more books to adhere to high moral values and give a meaningful leadership in taking the country along the path of progress and prosperity. The generous contribution from Citigroup Foundation and Citibank's clients has been a very rewarding one and a great encouragement for Biswa Sahitya Kendra."

Mamun Rashid said, "We hope to create more enthusiasm in the community to increase book reading in the society and facilitate Kendra's current Mobile Library programme. We are also proud to be associated with the Prothom Alo, the leading Bengali daily, which has taken a noble initiative to raise awareness in all aspects in this regard."
