Renewable resources can meet its power need

This was observed in a research-based paper presented by Engineer Tazmilur Rahman at a workshop on 'Green Energy Development Model in St Martin's Island' in the city yesterday.

The daylong workshop was organised by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at its auditorium.

Tazmilur Rahman said total demands of electricity in the island could be fulfilled with its renewable resources including wind power and biomass like coconut oil.

He said coconut coir, coconut frond, and coconut shell could also be used as a source of power generation.

"Bio-diesel can be produced from the coconut oil to run a diesel engine successfully," he added.

Tazmilur Rahman, project manager of LGED's Sustainable Renewable Energy, also presented his research model at the seminar.

Chairperson of Bangladesh Water Partnership Quamrul Islam Siddique was the guest speaker at the seminar.

He said time has come to curb destruction of rich bio-diversity of St Martin's Island.

Chaired by LGED Chief Engineer Md Shahidul Hassan, the workshop was also addressed by UNDP Assistant Resident Representative Shireen Kamal Sayeed.

LGED Superintending Engineer Md Wahidur Rahman delivered the welcome address.
