'Cancel river-link, Tipaimukh dam projects'

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa), an environmental group, organised the rally on the second bridge over Buriganga river near Babubazar yesterday.

The speakers said the implementation of the Indian projects would result in desertification, increased salinity and destruction of the existing ecology.

They said the projects would also affect the agricultural and industrial productivity of the country.

The projects might also trigger mass migration endangering this river-valley civilization, the speakers said.

They also demanded implementation of the decisions taken at the recently held international conference on 'Regional Cooperation on Trans-boundary Rivers: Impact of the Indian river-linking project' in the city.

Presided over by Bapa Joint Secretary Mihir Biswas, the rally was also addressed by Taksim A Khan, Dr Nuruddin Khan, Shamsul Momen Palash, Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, Bidhan Chandra Pal and Mujibur Rahman.
