Killing of RU teacher condemned
Unidentified assailants knifed and hammered the professor to death at Binodpur in Rajshahi yesterday morning.
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Awami League (AL) chief Shiekh Hasina termed it a pre-planned killing.
She blamed the Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, for the killing. The armed cadres of Shibir also tried to kill him several times earlier as he always upheld the spirit of the liberation war, she added.
The opposition leader also demanded exemplary punishment to the killers of Prof Yunus.
Bangladesh Economic Association blamed the zealots for the killing of Prof Yunus and termed it a part of a move to eliminate the pro-liberation forces.
It urged the government to form a high-powered investigation committee to identify the killers and bring them to book.
In a joint statement, 315 teachers of Dhaka University condemned the killing of Prof Yunus and demanded exemplary punishment to the killers.
The signatories to the statement included Dhaka University Teachers' Association President Prof Arefin Siddique, General Secretary Akhtaruzzaman, Prof Sultana Shafi, Prof Mostafa Chowdhury, Prof Quazi Shahidullah and Prof Sharifullah Bhuiyan.
Protesting the killing, the Workers Party of Bangladesh called on the countrymen to unite against the rising fundamentalism.
The Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD- Inu), Bangladesh Jubo Moitree, Bangladesh Awami Sechchasebak League and Bangladesh Chhatra Federation also condemned the killing.
