6th Cub Camporee begins today

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is expected to inaugurate the week-long event at 11:00 am, said Chief National Commissioner of Scouts Muhammad Fazlur Rahman at a press conference yesterday.

The camporee is designed to facilitate an exercise of personal ability and skills through sharing experiences among the cub scouts for a better future, he said.

About seven thousand participants, mostly schoolchildren, from across the country will take part in the camporee with a vow to creating better future for the nation-builders, Rahman said.

The participants also include 851 cub unit leaders, 69 contingent leaders, 400 scout officials and 400 volunteers.

Scout personalities, ministers, parliament members, bureaucrats and journalists are also expected to attend various events such as exhibition village, sub-camp Jalsa and cub carnival.

The programmes, fashioned as Aunyashan, have been split into eleven events -- funfair, traditional sports, friend-making, discussion and team work.

There will be six sub-camps in the camporee. The sub-camps will be named after the birds -- Kokil, Moyna, Gangchil, Machhranga, Pankouri and Tia. The main arena will be named after the national bird Doyel.

The total cost of the camporee has been estimated at Tk 73 lakh, of which Tk 3 lakh has been generated from the registration fees of the participants and the rest from the government fund, the organisers said.

Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman will attend the closing ceremony on December 30.

Camporee Committee Chairman AK Mirza Shahidul Islam, National Commissioner Jahangir Habibullah and Deputy Commissioners Abeda Akhtar and Shafik Alam Mehedi were also present at the press conference.
