8 doped, robbed in city

Eight people, including an Awami Swechchhasebak League leader, fell victim to fraudsters who robbed them of their valuables after doping them in separate incidents in the city yesterday.

Abu Kawsar, 45, vice-president of Swechchhasebak League, was coming to Dhaka by a bus from Gopalganj when a gang of criminals took away his valuables after making him unconscious by mixing drugs with his food.

A resident of Gopalganj brought him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) at 1:00pm yesterday. He regained his consciousness at 8:00pm.

In a separate incident, another gang robbed two brothers -- Lokman Hossain, 30, and Mohammad Mantu, 32, of Molladi, Barisal -- of Tk 45,000 and a passport by applying the same method.

The two brothers came to Dhaka yesterday morning and were going to Gulshun by a bus when a gang member posing as a food vendor offered them food mixed with drugs. Another member of the gang who sat beside the two picked their pockets as they fell unconscious.

In another incident, an unidentified man, aged around 40, were found unconscious at Mirpur 12 bus stand at around 5:00pm.

Local people rushed him to the DMCH. A bank document was found in his pocket that says he withdrew Tk 6,458 from the airport branch of a bank.

Three more people identified as Mita, 14, Jakir Hossain, 18, and Rahima, 20, and another unidentified man fell victim to the same crime. They were admitted to the DMCH.
