"Cooperation from the opposition political parties is needed to complete the unfinished development work of the government," he said as the chief guest at a Victory Day discussion organised by the Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS).
Environment and Forest Minister Tariqul Islam and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdullah Al Noman took part in the discussion as special guests.
Mannan Bhuiyan said the post-independence government has failed to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people who fought for the country during the War of Liberation.
He said late president Ziaur Rahman worked for translating the dreams of millions of freedom fighters into reality.
"But the enemies of independence and democracy did not let him live," he added.
The LGRD minister called on the opposition to forge unity being imbued with the spirit of the liberation war to build the country and given democracy an institutional shape.
Tariqul Islam called on all to resist the conspirators who are trying to undermine the spirit of the liberation war.
Abdullah Al Noman said the Awami League failed to give proper guidelines to the nation during the liberation war.
Late president Ziaur Rahman gave proper directions to the nation during the turbulent days of the liberation war in 1971, he added.
Jubo Dal President and Advisor to Commerce Ministry Barkat Ullah Bulu, artist Syed Lutful Huq, Prof Mahfuzul Huq and Akhtaruzzaman also spoke. JASAS President M A Malek presided.
The discussion was followed by a colourful cultural function.
