Jute products fair ends

Expansion of local market for diversified jute products is essential for revival of golden fiber's lost glory and its survival in the face of tough competition with artificial fibers, said the experts yesterday.

They were speaking at the closing ceremony of the weeklong fair of jute products organised by the Jute Diversification Promotion Centre in the city.

"First of its kind in the country, the fair was designed to facilitate interactions among the participating producers and other stakeholders," said the director of the centre Muhammad Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan.

He said jute products worth Tk10 lakh were sold while one organisation got an export order worth Tk50 lakh during the fair.

There were about 50 stalls in the fair run by the organisations like Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Janata Jute Mills Ltd, Sonali Ansh Industries Ltd, Creative Handicrafts, Moni Jute Goods, Reliance Jute Mills Ltd, Pubali Jute Mills Ltd, Golden Jute Diversification Centre, Prabartana and Bina Handicrafts.

The diversified jute products showcased in the fair included various kinds of shopping, travelling and fancy bags, sofa cover, tablecloth, cushion cover, bed sheet, decorative mats and different top apparels among other attractive handicrafts.

Certificates were distributed among the participating organisations at the closing ceremony attended by Health Secretary and Chairman of the International Jute Study Group Council AFM Sarwar Kamal and the executive director of the centre ABM Abdullah.
