Maintain navigability of Buriganga

Stressing the need for continued dredging, they urged the government to stop earth filling of the river by illegal encroachers.

The speakers also demanded immediate demolition of all illegal structures from the riverbank.

They said water of the Buriganga is being polluted due to unabated dumping of industrial wastage.

The rally was organised by Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa) at Sowarighat on the bank of the river.

Adressing the rally, Prof Nazrul Islam said the climate of Dhaka city will be changed if Buriganga dies.

He also urged the government to implement the taskforce report on Buriganga prepared by the shipping ministry.

Presided over by Bapa Joint Secretary Mihir Biswas, the rally was also addressed by Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Advocate Abul Kalam Azad and Mahbubur Rahman.

Bapa also held a boat rally to mobilise support in favour of their demand.
