Admission seekers go berserk

They took out a protest procession and vandalised the classrooms and auditorium of the institute as the latest decision threw them into an uncertain future.

Under the new admission procedure, the six textile diploma institutes in the country have introduced second shift this year and started enrolling students since September. But the higher authorities gave go-ahead for only three institutes in Tangail, Dinajpur and Noakhali on December 8, sources said.

The Barisal institute is among the three others that did not get approval for opening of second shift. The two others are located in Chittagong and Pabna.

But the Barisal institute has already selected 80 candidates, out of 457, on the basis of their merit for admission in the second shift.

These candidates had purchased application forms for admission for Tk 50 each.

The higher authorities had postponed the admission procedures on October 17, a week after the publication of the list of successful candidates, students said.

The agitated students damaged the furniture in the auditorium and classrooms during an hour-long rampage. Later, some teachers stepped in to bring the situation under control.

At a protest rally, the students demanded immediate opening of second shift in the Barisal institute and threatened to launch a tough movement if their demand goes unheeded.
