3 outlaws get death, another life

A Meherpur court yesterday sentenced three outlaws to death and another to life imprisonment for killing Awami League leader Ashraful Islam.

District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict.

The convicts with death are Atikur Rahman, 25, Khairul Islam, 30, and Barkat Ali, 28. The other convict is Bakkar Hossain. Of the four, Atikur and Khairul were tried in absentia.

All of them are members of Biplobi Communist Party (BCP). They hail from village Saharbati in Gangni upazila, Meherpur, police said.

According to the prosecution, the convicts stabbed Ashraf, president of Saharbati AL, to death on April 25 in 2002 when he was returning home from the local bazar.

Khalilur Rahman, elder brother of Ashraf, filed a case with Gangni police station against 13 people.
