2 to die for killing jewellery trader

Judge Mohammad Rezaul Islam of the First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the verdict on the convicts -- Sumon Saha, 25, and Satya Gopal Mondol, 26.

Though the names of the convicts were not included in the FIR (first information report), their confessional statements proved their involvement in the killing, the judge said in its verdict.

The convicts can appeal with the High Court against the judgement within seven days.

According to the prosecution, Abul kashem Munshi, 40, of Hossainpur under Debidwar in Comilla district, was killed by a gang of robbers at his jewellery shop at Tantibazar in Dhaka at about 10:30pm on February 4 last year. The gang also took away Tk 18,000 and gold ornaments worth about Tk 50,000.

The victim's son Md Billal Hossain filed a murder case with Kotwali police station the next day without mentioning any name of suspects.

The investigation officer pressed charges against the two convicts, who worked at nearby jewellery shops, on May 24 last year. During the investigation, they gave confessional statements to magistrates on different dates.

On hearing the verdict, a bemused Sumon wanted to know from his lawyer about his fate.

Additional Public Prosecutor Khorshed Alam appeared for the state while Advocate Mohammad Selim defended the accused.
