RU reopens tomorrow amid tension

The university was closed on October 30 following a daylong violence that left about 200 students, teachers and journalists injured.

The dormitories will open today and classes and scheduled examinations will start the next day.

In a press release yesterday, the authorities asked the students to carry their identity cards as police will be deployed to ensure security.

It also asked the students to take the proctor's permission before holding any procession and meeting on the campus.

Meanwhile, different student organisations, including Bangladesh Chhatra League and the alliance of 11 left-leaning student bodies, threatened to continue movement from the first day of the reopening if their demands were not met.

The demands include withdrawal of 'false cases' filed against 54 students and removal of RU Vice Chancellor Prof Faisul Islam Faruki, Proctor Prof Shamsul Alam Sarker and Provost of Taposhi Rabeya hall Prof Tahmina Begum.

To press for their demands, Progressive Student Alliance formed a human chain at Shaheb Bazar Zero point and held a protest meeting yesterday, with Samajtrantrik Chhatra Front General Secretary Shusantho Singha in the chair.
