Plan to minimise gaps among 3 streams of education

The students of English medium lack knowledge about their own country, madrasa students lack knowledge about modern science and the students of Bangla medium do not have fluency in English, he said.

Milon was speaking at the launching ceremony of 'Bangladesh Studies', a new GEC O Level subject comprising the history, rich culture and geography, especially tailored for Bangladeshi students. Edexcel International and the British Council jointly organised the programme.

The state minister said, "Unless we try to know about our motherland and its history, geography and culture and heritage, we cannot love the country truly."

"At the same time, we all must learn better English to prepare ourselves as competitive human resources in the era of globali-sation," he added.

The officials of Edexcel International and the British Council said the subject 'Bangladesh Studies' was introduced in Bangladesh in September and the students can take the exam on it for the first time in May 2005.

The syllabus of Bangladesh Studies consists of two papers. Paper one comprises the history and culture of Bangladesh and the paper two deals with the land and resources.

The syllabus was developed by subject experts in the UK, aided by teachers in Bangladesh.
