Withdraw anti-dumping duty on jute imports

Ambassador Syed Hasan Ahmad presented his Letter of Credence to Luiz Inacio Lula De Silva, President of Brazil recently, according to a message received here yesterday.

Ahmad, Ambassador to the United States of America, is concurrently accredited to Brazil, Colombia and Mexico as non-resident Ambassador of Bangladesh to these countries.

He conveyed to President De Silva the greetings and personal regards of President Iajuddin Ahmed and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

President De Silva recalled his meeting earlier this year with Khaleda Zia in Shanghai and conveyed his warm regards and best wishes to her as well as Iajuddin.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim reiterated his country's desire to further strengthen the bilateral relations with Bangladesh and expressed his intention to open a resident mission in Dhaka soon.

The Ambassador emphasised the need for more trade and investment relations between the two countries and requested the Brazilian government to withdraw the anti-dumping duty on Bangladeshi jute and jute goods exports to Brazil.

The Brazilian government assured the envoy that they would make every effort to discontinue the anti-dumping duty as early as possible.

He also met a number of senior officials including Jose Mauro da FC Couto, Special Adviser to the Minister for Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Vera Pedrosa, Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Edson Motero, Chief of Asia Division of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, and Dr Lourival Dantas, Director of Confederation of Brazilian Chambers of Industry.

In the meetings, he pressed for withdrawal of antidumping duty on Bangladeshi's jute and jute goods in the spirit of South-South cooperation.
