'Restore canals, waterbodies to remove waterlogging'
They called for a ban on earth filling of low-lying flood flow zones at Mirpur, Gabtoli, Aminbazar and Ashulia immediately.
The rally was organised by Janauddug, an environmental forum, at Shahbagh in the city.
The speakers called for quick implementation of prime minister's directive to restore the 26 identified grabbed canals in the city to solve the waterlogging problem.
They also demanded immediate demolition of all illegal structures by land encroachers on the bank of the rivers to ensure smooth flow of water.
The speakers suggested reorganisation of Rajuk and Wasa by incorporating people's representatives to improve their efficiency.
They also called for implementation of the circular water way project around the capital.
Abu Naser Khan, general secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, said natural canals and wetlands have to be protected to ensure proper drainage system in the city.
Sardar Ruhil Hossain Prince, a leader of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), said crores of taka have already been spent, but the problem of waterlogging is not solved.
Bishwasahitya Kendra Coordi-nator Golam Kibria, Zonouddog Coordinator Sharifuzzaman Sharif, Social Worker Biva Chowdhury, Sultana Alam of Dhanmondi Paribesh Unnayan Jote, Bishwa Shanti Sangha Advisor Advocate Abul Kalam, Green Force Coordinator Alamgir Kabir, Dr Nuruddin of SEBA and Ekma Hossain of PEACE spoke at the rally.
