Nat'l workshop on floods begins today
Under the personal initiative of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the PMO has arranged the three-day workshop on "Options for Flood Risks and Damage Reduction in Bangladesh."
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will inaugurate the workshop at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Centre.
Dhaka Wasa Managing Director Eng ANH Akhtar Hossain, Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre Executive Director Muhammad Saidur Rahman and Professor Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud will present three keynote papers at the workshop.
The papers are `An Overview of Impact of Floods in Bangladesh and Options for Mitigation'; 'Flood Disaster Risk Management and Reduction'; and 'Impact of Floods on the Economy of Bangladesh'.
In a number of working sessions on first and second days there will be presentation of 52 thematic papers by six groups for threadbare discussion to formulate suitable recommendations.
The major topics, under which 52 subtopic papers will be presented, are Flood and Disaster Management, Flood Impact on National Transportation, Flood Impact on Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Industries sectors, Flood Impact on Housing, Urban Planning Utilities (water supply, sanitation) and Environment, Flood impact on Social Services, Law and Order, Flood Impact on Economy, Major infrastructures and Livelihood and Mitigation Options in Each Case.
Politicians, MPs, pourashava and UP chairmen, civil and military officials, engineers, physicians, lawyers, academics, journalists, NGO personalities, civil society and representatives of various women organisations will take part in the workshop.
On the closing day, the workshop will adopt a set of recommendations which will be prescribed in text form.
The recommendation report will be submitted to the Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. And the PM will take step to implement those proposals after evaluation.
