The overall flood situation in the country has taken a serious turn but the government is not paying any attention to it, said the speakers at a roundtable yesterday.

They said the sufferings of the flood affected people would increase enormously if the government does not take urgent steps immediately.

The roundtable on 'Disaster Management and Flood Control: Bangladesh Perspective' was organised by the Forest and Environmental Affairs Sub-Committee of Awami League (AL) at CIRDAP auditorium in the city, says a press release.

Prof Habibur Rahman of Buet presented the keynote paper at the roundtable.

The speakers said despite massive floods in 1988, there was little damage to life, property and crops due to efficient management of the situation by the then AL government.

On the other hand, due to mismanagement of the BNP government, four lakh people died and resources worth Tk5000 crore were damaged in a tornado in 1991, they pointed out.

Presided over by sub-committee Chairman M A Mannan, the roundtable was participated by AL Presidium Member Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzaq MP, Tofael Ahmed, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Qazi Zafarullah MP, Prof Abdul Mannan MP, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AK Azad Chowdhury and Prof Sultana Shafi.
