3 to die for killing woman

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a youth along with his two accomplices to death and another to life imprisonment for the killing of his stepmother.

Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Rezaul Islam gave the verdict for killing of widow Guljan Bibi in Uttara on February 12, 1999.

The convicts sentenced to death are Shihabuddin Rana, Mohammad Alam and the victim's stepson Mohammad Yahia while Rafiqul Islam alias Titu was sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the prosecution Yahia hired the three men for Tk 50,000 and he along with his three accomplices strangled Guljan to death with a rope at around 8:00pm. The motive was to own the victim's property.

The victim's nephew Abdul Momen on February 12 filed a murder case with Uttara Police Station without naming any suspects. Police arrested Yahia and the convicted three and they gave confessional statements to magistrates.

Abdul Momen was present in the court and he expressed his satisfaction at the verdict.
