River erosion can be controlled effectively if the project initiatives are taken in dry season, said M Inamul Haque, additional chief engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), yesterday.

Talking to The Daily Star, he said implementation of the project should start in December so that it could be finished before the advent of the rainy season.

Earlier presenting a paper at the seminar room of the chief engineer of BWDB in the city, Inamul said flood damages huge crops during the rainy season in Sunamganj district every year due to cultivation of a hybrid variety of Boro rice which is harvested at the end of March.

Earlier, a local variety of rice was cultivated in the area which was harvested in December, well ahead of the rainy season, he added.

Inamul said they are planing to develop permanent embankment for flood protection at some areas of Sunamganj as well as encouraging the farmers to cultivate the local variety of Boro which is harvested two to three months before the monsoon.

Speaking on the occasion, some other engineers of BWDB requesting not to be named said implementation of water development projects generally begins in June when the rainy season is already on.

So, these projects are often not implemented properly causing wastage of fund, they added.
