Player quota or political quota?

There are 25 seats reserved for players under different categories.

Leaders of Jamaat-backed Islami Chhatra Shibir and the ruling party student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) are lobbying the authorities for admission of their activists under the player quota. They also took money from the applicants promising admission, sources said.

DPE Director Razia Begum said that the JCD leaders requested her for admission of one of their candidates Shahrier Parvez, under football event.

Earlier, the authorities postponed admission process under 'player quota' following an untoward incident at the university central playground on March 30.

On the day, the Shibir cadres led by their president Jahid Hossain Bhuiyan assaulted Lecturer Akhter Hossain Piaru of the Finance Department at the playground when the inter-university hockey final was going on.

Shibir is creating pressure on the player quota admission committee for admission of their activists in hockey event and drop the names of Mozammel Hossain and Ziauddin from the list. Mozammel and Zia, younger brothers of Lecturer Piaru, secured first and second position in the final game test.

Shibir leaders said both of them played the final match of inter-university hockey competition on behalf of CU though they are not yet students of the university.

"The official documents show that they did not play the match at all, Razia said.

Meanwhile, DPE has dropped name of Amir Khoshru from 100-metre free style swimming event though he secured second position in the final practical test. Instead, it allowed ANM Munir Ahmed Chowdhury Rony who bagged fourth place and asked him to face viva-voce.

Amir Khoshru (Ga unit roll no- 21958) has submitted an application to the Pro-vice Chancellor and the Sports Advisor Committee President Prof M Shamsuddin requesting investigation into the matter and sought justice in this regard. Amir Khoshru will begin fast-unto-death next week on the campus if his performance is not evaluated.

Razia, however, denied any irregularity in this regard. She said that Amir Khoshru's swimming style was wrong. We will select the candidates in free and fair manner. But Amir Khoshru said that his instructor of the 12-day short course on swimming under DPE certified that his style was right.

Convenor of the player quota admission committee, Prof M Shafiqul Islam said, we received hundreds of requests from the political leaders, CU administration and even some ministers for admission of their choice under the quota.

"We do not care such request", he said. "The applicants having absolute criteria would get chance for admission, otherwise not."

Admission process under player quota had been postponed fearing untoward incident. Final result will be published next week, he added.
