Tk 1554cr British grants for pry edn, char livelihood

Bangladesh will receive 150 million pounds sterling (about Tk 1554 crore) in grants from the UK in eight years for implementing two projects for the development of primary education and livelihood in chars.

Of the amount, 100 million pounds will go for supporting the second phase of Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-II), a US$ 1.86 billion venture with 67 percent contribution from the government of Bangladesh.

The programme is aimed at improving quality of primary education by developing the teaching profession, improving access to teaching materials, recruiting and training more teachers and increasing numbers of classrooms.

It will provide 17 million children a year with quality primary education through 11 categories of school.

The other British grant of 50 million pounds will be spent on 'Chars Livelihoods Programme', aimed at delivering improved social services, providing sustainable livelihoods and building better infrastructure for char-dwellers in the riverside areas of five districts of the northern Jamuna.

The project will be implemented in two phases during 2003-04 to 2010-2011 in 149 unions of 28 upazilas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj and Jamalpur districts.

British Minister for International Development Gareth Thomas and ERD Secretary Mirza Tassaduq Hussain Beg signed two agreements for the projects yesterday.
