Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the people to forge greater unity against BNP-Jamaat alliance.

She was speaking as chief guest at a meeting to condole the death of journalist Manik Chandra Saha at Shaheed Hadis Park. Khulna district and city units of Awami League organised the meeting.

Hasina said the present government was not elected by the people. In fact, the BNP and the Jamaat seized power by rigging the October 1 general election, she added.

Hasina blamed Matiur Rahman Nizami for his failure as agriculture minister and said he will show the same performance as industries minister.

She said another Jamaat leader, who is not an MP, has been made social welfare minister. He also did nothing for the welfare of the people, she added.

The AL chief said the prime minister cannot avoid the consequences of appointing an accused in a murder case as a cabinet minister.

She said the government had already looted Tk 11,000 crore through corrupt practices.

Presided over by Khulna City AL President Talukder Abdul Khaleque MP, the condolence meeting was also addressed by Presidium Member Begum Motia Chowdhury, Central Joint-Secretary Obaidul Kader, Central President of Jubo League Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mirza Azam MP and former Whip Mostofa Rashidi Shuja.

Meanwhile, Hasina made a commitment yesterday to donate Tk one lakh to 'Manik Saha Family Welfare Fund.'

She also took the responsibility for the publication of a book titled 'Swadhinatar Rakta Siri' by Manik Saha.

He could not publish the book due to financial constraints, said the family sources.

Manik once asked for financial help from Hasina to publish the book, the sources added.
