Multi-modal operation to solve transport problem

Speakers at a seminar yesterday stressed the need for integration of the existing transport infrastructures for multi-modal operation to solve the problems in this sector.

They also laid emphasis on consensus among the transport owners and policymakers in this regard.

The seminar on 'Multi-modal Surface Transport' was held at the BRAC Centre in the city.

State Minister for Communications Salauddin Ahmed attended the seminar as chief guest while Kevin O' Sullivan, chairman of WSPimc, a UK-based consultancy firm, was in the chair.

The minister said the transport sector could play a significant role in poverty alleviation and economic growth of the country.

Hans Carlsson of Asian Development Bank said his organisation and the World Bank would invest hundreds of millions of dollars for the development of transport sector in Bangladesh.

Kevin O' Sullivan highlighted the need for greater coordination in the transport sector of the country.

Organised by the Local Consultative Group (LGG) on transport, the seminar was the second of a series of four seminars being held once a month in the city to assist policymakers in developing options in transport-related problems in the country.

Eng Quamrul Islam Siddiqui, executive director of Dhaka Urban Transport Coordination Board, Mahmud Hassan Mansur, chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, A M M Nasiruddin, additional secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, and Dr M Rahmatullah, programme director, Center for Policy Dialogue, also spoke at the seminar.
