A gunfight between activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) and the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Moulvibazar Government College yesterday left one Shibir leader killed and seven others injured.

Campus sources said the trouble began at noon over capture of a student dormitory on the campus. Activists of both the student bodies assembled on the campus at around 11:30am and took out separate processions.

When the ICS activists were marching toward the dormitory at about 12:00 noon, the JCD men swooped on them, leading to the gunfight. Both sides traded about 50 shots and exploded crackers during the hour-long clash.

Mohammad Almas Miah, 28, organising secretary of the ICS Moulvibazar Government College unit, was shot in the chest and he died instantly. Seven other ICS men, who received bullet wounds, have been admitted to Sadar Hospital.

Police fired tear gas shells and dispersed the clashing groups. They recovered the body of ICS leader Almas and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.

Leaders of both the ICS and JCD blamed each other for the clash. Additional police have been deployed at different points of the town. No case was filed till 6:00pm yesterday.
