Tangail AL leader gunned down: Hartal today

Our Correspondent, Tangail
Unidentified assailants gunned down a district Awami League leader and a non governmental organisation (NGO) executive at Collegepara last night.

The AL called a dawn to dusk hartal in the town today in protest of the killing.

Aminur Rahman Khan Bappi, 37, candidate for the AL district secretary, along with his friend and executive of an NGO Motiar Rahman Moti, 45, was coming out of his house to say tarabi prayers.

The assailants opened fire on them on their way to the mosque at around 7:30pm. A bullet hit Bappi in his head and he died on the spot.

Moti was rushed to Tangail General Hospital with a bullet injury in his shoulder where the doctors declared him dead.

The reason behind the killings could not be known immediately. Sources said the duo might have been killed over tender mongering.

Locals said Rana and Baapi, two brothers, are famous for their criminal activities in Tangail. Bappi was accused in more than 10 cases and out on bail two and a half months ago.

The killings brought a hushed unease to the town. Traders and businessmen closed their shops to avoid any untoward situation.

Activists of the district AL brought out a procession from the party office at Nirlarmore and paraded streets of the town. They demanded exemplary punishment to the killers.

Additional forces were deployed in different intersections and important places of the town to avoid any untoward incident, sources said.
