Tributes paid to Bhasani
Different political and socio-cultural organisations marked the day with elaborate programmes, including placing of wreaths at his mazar, discussion and doa mahfil.
The ruling BNP organised a discussion and doa mahfil at Santosh in Tangail, the birthplace of the late leader. A team of BNP led by the information minister placed wreaths at the mazar of Maulana Bhasani.
The, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani Parishad, the Moulana Bhasani Andolon, the Jatiya Party (Manju), and the Jatiya Party (Ershad) also placed wreaths and offered fateha at the mazar.
President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion.
Addressing a discussion on the premises of the mazar of Maulana Bhasani, Information Minister Tariqul Islam said legendary leader Maulana Bhasani dedicated his whole life to the cause of the oppressed people.
He said Maulana Bhasani had always upheld the national and people's interests and played an important role in all democratic movements since the British rule.
Recalling the uncompromising attitude of Maulana Bhasani, the information minister said Bhasani's unflinching leadership had been a threat to autocratic rulers and oppressors.
