Sixteen AL men sent to jail for 'damaging' PM's portrait

Sixteen leaders and activists of Awami League's three front organisations, indicted for damaging the portrait of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Tongi BNP office, were sent to Dhaka Central Jail after they surrendered to court for bail yesterday.

Judge Abdul Hye of the Court of District and Sessions Judge, Dhaka rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail. The case was filed with Kamalapur Railway Station (GRP) on September 10.

The accused are Motiur Rahman Moti, brother of Ahsanullah Master MP, Mohin Mahmud alias Mohin, Shafiqul Islam alias Shafiq, Nazrul Islam, Abul Kalam, Bachchu Miah, Manik Miah, Bakul Miah, Khorshed Alam, Solaiman, Taher Munshi, Bahar Miah, Commissioner of Tongi municipality Nazrul Islam alias Nuru, Kazi Kamrul, Jalal Miah and Sohel Miah.

All the accused are leaders and activists of Jubo League, Chhatra League and Sechchasebok League of Tongi thana unit.

In the bail petition, defence lawyers said the accused on September 19 sought anticipatory bail from the High Court (HC), following which the HC directed them to appear before the District and Sessions Judge's court within 30 days to seek bail. The HC also directed the police not to arrest or harass them.

The prosecution opposed the petition.

Advocates Sahara Khatun, Mohammad Israfil, Mokhlesur Rahman Badal, Abdullah Abu and Abdur Rahman Howladar appeared for the defendants.
