Eight Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) cadres in Sylhet were accused yesterday of involvement with the assault on a young army officer on November 7.

Kotwali police filed a charge sheet against Habib Ibne Islam Chamak, Lavlu, Abdul Hakim, Muhibul Huq Chowdhury Rahi, Aminur Rahman Pamel, Junel Ahmed, Lipu Banik and Dibya Roy under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Court for the attack on Second Lieutenant Jubair of Jalalabad cantonment.

Brig Gen Matiur Rahman, station commander of Jalalabad cantonment, filed the case with Kotwali Police Station accusing seven persons.

Rahi, Kabir Khan, Lipu, Junel and Pamel were caught in Dhaka on November 9 with a private car. They were produced before the Sylhet Sadar Magistrate's Court the next day.

Dibya, Lavlu and Rahi were placed on a day's remand on November 11 and the others were sent to Sylhet Central Jail.

The main accused Chamak is still at large.

A team of army personnel held Hakim within hours of the assault and handed him over to police the same night.

Meanwhile, former JCD leader Mashuk Ahmed, owner of the private car which the JCD cadres used on that night, filed another case on November 9 accusing Rahi and others of hijacking his car. But locals believe that Mashuk filed the case only to save the cadres, said a police official.

A group of JCD activists led by Chamak swooped on Second Lieutenant Jubair in the city's Barutkhana area on November 7. They also brandished firearms and hurled abusive words.
